An arab, and it's a present. :) Getting back into the swing of drawing again.

He's going to be a dapple grey. I burnt the sketch quite a lot so it would show up here.

Yesterday, my dad and I drove up to Glenworth Vallley for a three-hour ride, as a birthday present. The main attraction of this place is that once the staff have seen that you're experienced and in control, they let you go off on your own. Another refreshing change was that the staff are genuinely welcoming and friendly. We started off with a standard trail riding group, but the guide left us after half an hour, since the whole group were riders.

As expected, I'm much improved since last time I rode, four very long years ago (I had about twelve years' experience before that). We weren't allowed to bring a bag with us, so I couldn't get any photos on the trail ... no [info]ridercritique for me this time. I do know that my biggest  problems - sticking out elbows and toes, have disappeared. I'll have to see about my lower leg position over a jump sometime, that's the next priority.

I was on this part-arab named Sahara:

Going back to photoshop, to see if I can still use it, and figuring out a way to paint grass. (I used a corner of a photo I took for reference.)

Steps I followed:
1. Paint in some blobby shadows to show where the patch of grass will go.
2. Midtones - some bits of grass coming out toward you, and some at back and sides, going over the edges of the shadow.
3. Smudge the edges of the blades of grass if you pressed too hard and the end isn't tapered off nicely.
4. Highlights.
5. Shadows again, so the blades of grass don't look like they're stuck on or floating, but appear to be coming from the center of a clump.

100%

33%, how it's meant to be seen.

I'm happy with that for now.
